Hello again,
In the past few blogs I have been posting information pertaining to the following:
* Artificial Intelligence 2200 (What will it look like?)
* Updated information on AI testing in our Schools.
* Can Artificial Intelligence change life as we know it?
I'm going to head a new direction with this post and ask a question that many of you have talked about at home.
How do you imagine the future?
&
Will it (The future) involve Artificial Intelligence in your home?
In the last few weeks, I have been discussing Artificial Intelligence and how it is starting to creep its way into our daily lives without us even realizing the technology exists.
Over the weekend I happened to be over at a department store shopping for a new Washer and Dryer, but decided to make my way over to the Refrigerators. As I walked around in the store, I noticed that the newest Washers and Dryers had a new form of technology, but what really surprised me was the Refrigerators.
The newest additions have a digital platform that allows you to communicate with your Refrigerator. The Refrigerator I happened to be playing with had some form of AI, that allowed it to communicate to the owner when something was getting low, or when an item needed to be replenished.
I then walked over to the audio section, to find a full display of (Alexa) type speakers available for anyone to test out in the store.
As I walked around in the store, the customer service representative approached me with a SMART speaker and told me that we NEEDED to purchase this for our home. I quickly refused to purchase the item, and we left the store without purchasing anything at all.
Upon arrival to our home, I continued the conversation about the SMART speaker the customer service representative had brought me in the store.
As I sat down in front of my NEW Laptop to do homework, I called out loud to my 12yrs old. All of a sudden something responded out of my computer!
Apparently, the computer I purchased came with an embedded software program that is called, (CORTANA), and it has been listening to everything I have been doing for a few weeks.
I found it odd, that I did not even allow this software to record what I was doing, but it still was operating on my device.
Has this ever happened to anyone else?
I tried not to allow these devices into my home of residence for fear of my privacy, but somehow it was embedded into the laptop.
SO,
I once again pose the following question:
How do you imagine the future?
&
Will it (The future) involve Artificial Intelligence in your home?

Tony,
ReplyDeleteYou make some interesting points about AI. My wife bought an Alexa and I do not like it. But what I do like is the music I get from Amazon prime using Alexa. I have seen the refrigerator that can make you grocery list and send it to your phone. The would be cool if you were at the store and you could look inside your frig to see if you need milk and eggs. The other day I saw a commercial about a stove that was similar to the refrigerator you were talking about. We (the older generation) my be nervous about this technology but I am not sure about my kids worrying about it. AI can make life better but I am always skeptical of using it. Take a look at this link. It is not the commercial I saw but the stove is really cool.

Mark,
DeleteThanks for you input, I will go over to the link now.
But Yes,
Technology is taking over and I'm not sure we are ready (Older Generation).

Tony,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your experiences with AI. I always deactivate Cortana on my computer. I believe AI is already in many homes and not sure if you have much of an option. For example, if you are streaming music of media, the certain application you are using is recording your searches and what you have watched and listened to. That is how it is pulling up your recommended lists. You mentioned that you did not purchase the speaker due to the fear of privacy. Have you ever used a smart assistant program on your phone? Like google assistant or Siri? These are very similar to the smart home devices like the speakers. Both communicating your request and connected to the internet. Great post, and very interesting.

Tony,
ReplyDeletethank you for posting this question!
I feel uncomfortable with smart home devices. I found that much of the information I revealed in my unconscious conversation at home was monitored. Just like I use Alexa to play children's songs at home, my Amazon homepage then pushs all kinds of maternity products to me. When I was video chatting with my parents in China, I mentioned that I hope to invite them traveling to the United States, and then my amazon page and other web pages would jump out of many ads on travel insurance for foreigners and flight ticket ads, many of them written in Chinese. On the one hand, we hope to enjoy the convenience from the AI technology, on the other hand, as human begins we also worried about the developing trend of AI technology will destroy or prompts our society.

Yang,
DeleteI too worry about the privacy at home. Your post scares me. I personally do not have any ALEXA type devices or Google devices that listen to me. I do have an ASUS computer that came with a program called (Cortena) and it seems to always be listening to everything I do, so i choose to turn off my computer.
I am a little paranoid after watching the (Snowden) movie about how the government can listen to everything you are doing with a click of the button.
Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Tony,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your post!
Smart home devices bring a lot of convenience to our lives and realize personalized service. But as we mentioned, user privacy is threatened. In December last year, a surveillance incident occurred in Amazon, and it was revealed that its smart speakers leaked user privacy scandals.
Jialu
Jialu,
DeleteI remember when this incident occurred.
My family members are starting to buy Alexa type products, but I am going to hold off for another year. I do not want my privacy invaded at all times. Those devices are always (LISTENING) in on everything you are doing.
Thanks for your post.

Tony,
ReplyDeleteGreat question that can gain you a ton of thoughts on the topic of Artificial Intelligence. To answer your question- I was motivated and you definitely peaked my interest in this topic.
Although, I am an "old school" kind of guy- I am very aware of AI and technological advances simply being immersed in this in my former job(s) in the military. I do envision AI being a large part of our lives in the future. Not to mention- the refrigerator or speaker you were talking about, but other items such as home security systems- personal servers at home with "Jarvis" like programs that run every facet of your home, security, electricity, water, and the likes. This concerns me mostly due to privacy concerns, but largely because what bugs or malware or even a virus can do to shut the whole system down. How penetrable will AI of the future be? How protected will it be? Those are my main concerns. You know in my "former life" lol- I had to do vulnerability assessments that would target us and find ways or rapid solution development to advise stakeholders of their vulnerabilities and the outcomes if they were being exploited. Think- NY, or DC electricity down for two days- think mass chaos type of thing. However, I do think in the future AI will become more a part of our life without even knowing it and that's of great concern to me. But, with more education and understanding of our privacy laws, technology uses and potential- we can feel a little better about AI. I do envision Tony Stark "Jarvis" System or Tom Cruise in "Minority Report" type of AI that will not only change the way we think about AI, but change the way our society interacts with it.

Nick,
DeleteYou bring up some great points. I enjoyed your post. Maybe one day I can pick your brain (in person) on special area's you may know about concerning AI. In the mean time I will continue to research information on the web and post all the new information I have uncovered on this block.
Thanks for stopping by.
